They have great relationships with kids especially when thye grew up with them. They love other animals too. They were primarily hunters and they flush out birds for the hunters to shoot the prey as food, however later on the dogs have become popular as pets.
A Cocker Spaniel likes anyone from different animal species and strangers. It can be very amiable and sociable as well. This dog has a responsive and cheerful attitude. Cocker Spaniels are usually a standout in obedience training and can be very intelligent as a dog. It is easy to train a Cocker Spaniel, both inexperience and experienced owners can benefit a lot from a Cocker Spaniel.
Cocker Spaniels are friendly, active,enthusiastic, willing and keen dogs. They can be very good watch dogs and barking at unknown strangers can be a noisy problem. They can be very affectionate and a devoted pet. Most times a Cocker Spaniel clings a lot to his owner and can be so dedicated and demanding. It needs lots of play and attention, great for children who are developing their motor skills as companionship and friend.
They are elegant, dignified, and pretty dogs and has a special coat created just for them. Their coat are medium in length and silky, the undercoat is shorter. It has a fluffy coat, and after a dog show, usually this is trimmed into a puppy cut, especially the ears so long hair can be eliminated so air can go in the ears. This is to serve as ventilation so to avoid ear infection in the process. The color of a Cocker Spaniel varies from chocolate, buff, or black and some have trims of tan. Its' ears hangs on the side, silky and carries an expression amusingly innocent.
They grow from 13 to 16 inches and weighs 22 to 28 pounds. Cocker Spaniels have sturdy and small body and can shed his coat occasionally but not heavily, it is also not recommended to people with severe allergies.
Sprucing Up A Cocker Spaniel
The Cocker Spaniel wears his coat brushed daily for keeping it in an elegant condition. Sometimes the clipping of the coat is important. Grooming sessions should keep the canals of the ear making sure it clean and dry, to avoid unnecessary bacterial and disease growth.
Health, Lifetime And Lineage
A Cocker Spaniel lives from 10 to 14 years and they may have several health issues common to the breed, like autoimmune problems, epilepsy, skin conditions, cataracts, HD and PRS. Before buying a Cocker Spaniel it is better to check if the parents are certified with CERF and OFA to ensure the purity of the breed.
The ancestors of a Cocker Spaniel hails from England which was recognize in the year 1880. It was introduced in the United States. Cockery Spaniels have Spanish blood and a pure breed. It has a AKC registration in the year 1848 to ensure future owners of its breed.
