Its’ energy levels prevents it from being close to smaller children, because it can cause injury because of its size. However, this pet is quite good in dealing with other household animals. Caution is necessary besides its being a good nature dog, because of its capacity to so energetic which can prove fatal to smaller animals.
This dog can get along well with all sorts of people, even with strangers, but people have to be careful when a Flat-coated Retriever is around, because it can chew and jump on you. These are the traits which have to be tempered by daily exercise, to use up the energy it has. This dog can be provided with toys it can chew, so it won’t chew your sofas and other furniture in the house.
This dog is sturdy, powerful, strong, and large. It is always ready for action and has an enthusiastic eager expression at all times. It is full of energy that it thrives on a home with lots of exercise, games, and fun. It wears its coat medium in length, flat and dense. The texture of its coat varies, but generally, it’s fine. The coat has two colors; solid liver or solid black. Male and female Flat-coat retriever can weigh as much as sixty (60) to seventy five (75) pounds. Females can be twenty two (22) to twenty three (23) inches in height.
Sprucing Up A Flat Coated Retriever
This dog can is a heavy shedder when it is during the season of shedding. The Flat-coated retriever is not for allergic persons. Sprucing up a Flat-coated retriever will require you to brush at least twice in seven days, to keep the coat spic and span, and to avoid the hair from matting. Brushing and combing increases when it’s already the season for shedding.
Its ears have to be checked regularly, dry and cleaned, otherwise infectious diseases can be deadly or fatal.
Health, Lifespan And Lineage
The life of this breed can be as long as eight (8) to ten (10) years. Its life is quite short as compared to some dogs. It has several dog sicknesses unique to its breed like: entropion, thyroid problems, cancer, HD, PRA, cataracts, and luxating patella.
This dog comes from Great Britain. The Flat-coated Retriever is a water retriever and a hunter. This breed is one of the most well known, and its name was once “wavy coated retrievers.” In 1915, this dog was authentically registered with the AKC by the year 1915.
