Chow Chow
Chow Chow breed are naturally an effective watch dog because of its protective attitude towards its family owners. It is also faithful, dignified, and independent dog. This dog is agile, has a sharp sentient intelligence, and stubborn. It needs an owner with an experience of owning a Chow Chow; so it can be trained properly, otherwise it can be a real headache.
Its instinctive territorial protectiveness is so strong so it needs to be trained with other dogs, it needs to have a stable and likeable temperament, otherwise; it will become unlikeable to other dogs. Chow Chow puppies love children, and as they grow older, they tend to choose their friend who is now older and considerate. However, if a Chow Chow dog came in quite grown up, it is better to have an experienced dog owner to take care of this pet.
This breed can be very aggressive to cats and other dog breeds. It can be cautious and reserved especially with strangers and guests. This dog is a natural predator, and good in hunting small animals, even if they be cats, dogs, chickens, rabbits, and hamsters. This pet is a hardy breed as it is difficult to train, but the good thing about Chow Chow is; it is easy to housebreak.
This dog can weight as much as fifty (50) to seventy five (75) pounds, and it can grow as much as seventeen (17) to twenty one (21) inches. The Chow Chow is a family member of the Spitz. It has a dopey facial expression and a natural athletic build. It wears its coat rough, coarse, and dense. It has a unique ruff wearing it like a fluffy necklace on its neck. It has another type of coat, some Chow Chow wears its coat smooth coated, it has softer undercoat, and dense undercoat with feathering and riff.
Sprucing Up A Chow Chow
Sprucing up a Chow Chow really depends on what kind of coat it wears, if it is rough coated, you will need to brush it twice in 7 days or daily when shedding is in season. The smooth coated Chow Chow needs brushing regularly. A professional groomer is needed for this dog, especially when it has to join dog shows. Bathing is needed whenever necessary. Both types are considered as “medium shedders.”
Chow Chow’s ears has to be checked regularly, it has to be kept dry and clean to prevent the onset of bacteria, ear infections and other diseases. Its eyes are not a real problem, but it’s good to check it as well, and apply eye dog ointment whenever necessary for hygienic purposes.
Health, Lifespan And Lineage
The lifespan of a Chow Chow is eight (8) to twelve (12) years. It has health issues typical of its breed like renal cortical hypoplasia, thyroid problems, entropion, glaucoma, sensitivity to medications and chemicals, skin conditions and allergies. Chow Chow parents carry with them CERF and OFA certificates.
This breed in China is instinctively a hunter, protector, and herder. Chow Chows were sent to Great Britain by 18th century and was officially registered with the AKC by the year 1903.
