Chinese Shar Pei is an easy go lucky breed, affable but it can also be aloof and independent. It needs early socialization to be likeable by most household pets, because it is naturally confident and serious and happy to be on its own.

This dog has a certain sense of dignity, as household pets give it proper dignity and respect, especially when it is socialized early. This pet can be a problem when not trained because it is instinctively a fighter dog. It is good to have an early education in socialization as a puppy with children and other pets at home.

Chinese Shar Pei is a challenging dog for trainers as it is also instinctively stubborn and obstinate. It needs an owner who has some experience in owning a Chinese Shar Pei. The technique in training this dog is to start early on, to avoid its natural independence, excessive stubbornness, and aggressiveness to set in. It is good to acquire a Chinese Shar Pei as a puppy, and have it mingled with other house hold pets. Trainers must be confident, firm, and positive. You should never treat this dog rough handedly, but disciplining it is a necessity.

This breed needs regular exercise because it has lots of energy for hunting, and may hunt cats, small pet’s like’s hamsters, live stocks like chicken when unleashed. Therefore, it’s good to keep it away from other household animals if it was not train as a puppy to socialize with other pets.

This pet has an athletic build. It has a unique wrinkly skin on its face and body, which can make it noticeable especially in dog shows. It has an aura of crossness and sulkiness.

This dog looks as if it is always mourning because of its wrinkled face and it can get your attention rather easily. It wars its coat straight, short and close fitting. It has various colors like cream, fawn, silver, sable, red, black, and chocolate. Chinese Shar Pei can grow as much as eighteen (18) to twenty (20) inches, and can weight as much as forty (40) to sixty five (65) pounds.

Sprucing Up A Chinese Shar Pei

This dog needs occasional regular brushing of its coat to make it spic and span. It has low grooming needs. What is important is to check the skin folds if there are some skin infections which might be infesting and attacking it, or its eyes and ears, to prevent the onset of infection.

Health, Lifespan And Lineage

Chinese Shar Pei lives from seven (7) to twelve (12 years. It has some health problems like malabsorption, sensitivity to medications and chemicals, skin conditions, allergies, defect its auto immune system, bloat, thyroid problems, HD, and entropion. The parents of a Chinese Shar-Pei puppy must have CERF and OFA certificates.

This breed hails from China. It is considered as one of the oldest fighting, hunting, and herd protection dog. The Chinese Shar Pei breed was in danger for sometime, until it became as a family pet. Eventually it was registered with the AKC in the year 1991.
