The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a naturally sensible, determined, and devoted breed. It is loyal, protective, and effective watchdog. It is naturally protective of its territory and cautious and aggressive with strangers.

This breed is sensible, devoted, and determined. It loves to be with gentle and considerate children. It can get along well with family pets especially those whom they grew up with. This dog is naturally dominant can be very overly confident, so it needs somebody who has some experience in owning a dog.

The trainer must be confident, and has lots of experience in training a dog, he also has to be optimistic and positive, to make it sure this dog obeys. Some they use the technique of a bottled can with stones or beads. The trainers rang the can if the dog does not obey, and shouts “Stop!” and repeat the training process, until the dog gets it and showers it with praises.

It wears its coat, dense, harsh, short, and it has an outer coat which is oily making it waterproof. The undercoat is wooly. It can weigh as much as fifty five (55) to eighty (80) pounds, and it can grow as much as twenty one (21) to twenty six (26) inches.

Sprucing Up A Chesapeake Bay Retriever

You have to avoid too much brushing of it coat to maintain the shiny texture of its coat’s hair. Weekly brushing with a bristle brush whenever necessary especially when the season of shedding occurs.

This dog should have its ears checked occasionally. Make it sure that it’s dry and clean to avoid the onset of infectious diseases. The eyes also has to be checked and if there is a need to apply some eye dog ointment, then you have to apply it to avoid the onset of eye infections.

Health, Lineage And Lifespan

The lifespan of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever is ten (10) to twelve (12) years, and it has a number of health issues like cataracts, elbow dysplasia, HD, PRA, and OCD. The parents of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever must have a CERF AND OFA certificates.

The ancestor of this dog is naturally Americans. They retrieve ducks and geese especially in coldest and roughest waters. It is known to be a guard and watchdog. In the year 1878, it was registered with the AKC.
