Cairn Terrier

This breed is full of alertness and loves to play and run around. It has the capacity to really bark and can alarm you whenever there is something amiss and therefore can make a reliable watchdog. This breed loves to be with children who are considerate and older. It loves to join family activities and loves to play around. A Cairn Terrier can be bossy with other dogs, especially with male dogs of the same breed. This dog can be friendly or reserved depending on the temperament of the dog. The Cairn Terrier has the habit of digging and it’s not great for this pet to be left in a beautiful garden, unless you are prepared to see all your plants out rooted.
This dog is famous, as Toto is a Cairn Terrier, the famous dog of Dorothy from the movie Wizard of Oz shown in the year 1930’s. The dog that was in the movie weighs thirteen (13) to sixteen (16) pounds and must have been ten (10) to twelve (12) inches. It has a healthy build; it wears an intelligent and alert expression. The Cairn Terrier wears its coat harsh and long and is a weather resistant. It has a softer undercoat, which is dense. The coloring of the coat may vary from charcoal gray, brindle, gray, red, and wheaten.
Sprucing Up A Cairn Terrier
This breed needs brushing regularly to make the coat really sleek and look great. The maximum time of investment for grooming is as much as twice a week. You can use a damp towel and rub the coat downwards whenever it is needed. A Cairn Terrier sheds low and may shed high when it’s seasonal. It is good to check its teeth and nails. You need to clip the coat so the dead coat is cleaned up every 2 to three months.
A Cairn Terrier needs to have its eyes and ears cleaned regularly to avoid the onset of infection, bacteria, and viruses which can cause havoc to its general health. The hair at the bottom will have to clean regularly whenever necessary for hygienic purposes. It needs to have regular bathing whenever it is necessary.
Lifespan, Health, And Lineage
This breed can live as much as thirteen (13) to sixteen (16) years at the maximum. It has lots of health problems typical of its breed like thyroid problems, allergies, seizures, CMO, PRA, kidney disorders, blood disorders, luxating patella, Legg Perthes, glaucoma, cataracts. The puppy’s parents of a Cairn Terrier carry with them GDC, CERF, and OFA certificates.
The ancestors of a Cairn Terrier hail from Western Highlands, Scotland. This dog is trained to be hunters of otters, foxes, and weasels. It was registered at AKC’s by 1913.
