This dog is very protective to its owners. He loves older children and really a great household pet. Belgian Tervuren instinctively preys around smaller animals, so it shouldn’t be with rabbits, cat, and other small pets. Belgian Tervuren is profitable for people who have experience in taking care of dogs. It also prefers families who love to go around and with an active and fun style of living. Training this breed is not as hard, but it can be very stubborn at times. Families owning a Belgian Tervuren find it a lovable companion and pet.

The built of this big is quite impressive as it is well built. It’s a dog considered large for its size. It has a good looking face. It wears its coat thick, straight, and long. Its coat has different colors: gray with black tipped hairs or black mask, its main color can also be red and fawn. It has an intelligent and expression.

This dog is a heavy shredder; it is not advisable for asthmatic persons to have a Belgian Tervuren. Its heaviest days are those during the time of autumn and spring. It has a height of 22 to 26 inches and its weight counts 45 to 80 pounds.

Grooming a Belgian Tervuren is daily, to maintain its coat; otherwise, it will end up very shaggy, especially during the shredding season. However, most dog owners of Belgian Tervuren usually comb the hair daily or weekly depending on the season. Cleaning up daily is also important if you own a Belgian Tervuren as it shreds heavily all round the house.

Belgian Tervuren lives up to a maximum of 12 to 14 years. Once it reaches its mature age, it has lots of health problems as common to mature dogs, like epilepsy, cataracts, thyroid problems, HD and elbow dysplasia. The parents of a Belgian Tervuren carry CERF and OFA Certificates.

The ancestors of this breed are from Belgium; that is why it is called “Belgian Tervuren.” There are actually four types of Belgian Shepherd dog. Instinctively they are guard and herd the sheep. In 1912, it was registered officially as a Belgian Tervuren in the year 1912 at AKC’s, but it was only in 1959 that it was known and registered as a “Belgian Sheepdog.”
