The built of a Basset Hound is like th Dachshund and the head is like the Bloodhound. It carries a doleful relaxed expression on its face. This is naturally sturdy, compact, low bodied, with large feet and trailing ears! It wears its coat short, sleek, hard. It has colorings like white and tan, red and white and sometimes black, white and tan. This dog weighs as much as forty (40) and eighty (80) pounds, and it can grow as much as eleven (11) and fifteen (15) inches.
Sprucing Up A Basset Hound
You need to brush, comb, and wipe down its coat occasionally to have a well conditioned and glossy look. It is good to have its long drooping ears cleaned regularly to avoid undue infections. This dog may need bathing when necessary. It is also good to check its eyes and feet, and have it cleaned whenever necessary for hygienic purposes.
Health, Lifespan And Lineage
The lifespan of a Basset Hound is ten (10) to twelve (12) years. It has several issues of health like ear infections, thyroid problems, vWD, glaucoma, bleeding disorders, spinal problems, elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, entropion, PRA, ectropion, and luxating patella. The Basset Hound parents carry CERF and OFA certificates.
This breed comes from Great Britain and France. The Basset Hound known existence started in the 16th century. The French name means “low to the ground”; which is Bas, and it is a natural hunter, and trained to sharpen its skills, the hunting instinct remains to this day. In 1885, the breed was registered with the AKC.
