Most Basenji can be curious and playful. It is also affectionate and intelligent. The Basenji dogs are alert, energetic and may be very eager to please! They don’t bark a lot, but they are excellent watchdogs. These breed is often not for younger children as it doesn’t’ want to be teased. A Basenji can get along with other pets when it is trained to socialize.

Basenji dogs are from South Africa, and instinctively a hunter dog. This type of dogs has a unique sound, it howls and yodels, very different from the bark we know. Basenji dogs have a distinct larynx shape which brings a rather unique sound as compared normally to other dogs. It also has a distinct smell which is easily identifiable only for Basenji dogs.

This breed can be manipulated and domineering and is better adapted to serious experienced owners. Basenji can be annoying sometimes as they can give you lots of other noises other than barking, like lots of whining!

It is best to go around with your Basenji for a dog exercise, so it will not get really bored and may be tempted to do some crazy behavior to destruction. Most times this breed is manageable, even if it has its own independent streak. Most dog owners of a Basenji are really firm and assertive especially during obedience school training.

Positive reinforcements are useful in making this dog obey or it can be very rebellious in most circumstances. Chewing is one of those Basenji habits, which you need to manage, if you will leave your dog in a longer time than expected.

The Looks Of A Basenji

A Basenji is athletic and handsomer than most dogs even if its size is small. It is intelligent, alert and carries an eager expression. It wears its coat smooth and sleek. The color of its coat can vary from black and tan, black and brindle; or pure colors like copper, red or brindle, this is inclusive of white a markings. The first impression you might have is this Basenji dog is a “worrier” as its brow is furrowed naturally. It also has a unique blaze on its face. Its height is from 16 to 17 inches, and its weight from 20 to 25 pounds.

Sprucing Up A Basenji

Basenji’s grooming and brush up is not as demanding as the other breed as they don’t shred very much. It wears its coat really sleek and its easy groom this breed. Regular brushing is done to take off some falling hair, and it can be cleaned up with a damp cloth when necessary, to make the coat in maintained and glossy condition.

Health And Lifespan

Basenji lives at the maximum of thirteen years. It has a number of health problems associated with a Basenji. It has digestive problems, hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, and Fanconi’s Syndrome, PKAD, and eye defects. The parents of a Basenji puppy have CERF and OFA Certification.

Hometown Of A Basenji

The hometown of a Basenji is Zaire, it was famously known as the “Congo Dog.” Its breed is originally for hunting and it is used by the pygmies of Congo. A Basenji was formally introduced in Europe in 1930’s and was finally registered in 1944 with AKC.
