American Water Spaniel
An American Water Spaniel is a dog which makes a lovable friend, intelligent, enthusiastic, and eager to accompany you. It is a pet with lots of energy. As a young puppy, it is already fun to be around as it is loyal and dedicated. This pet is advisable for new owners who didn’t have an experience of taking care of a dog.
These breed is alert and active but very protective to their owners. They are considered as dependable watchdogs. It keeps you away from strangers and it has its reserved feelings with unknown people. All American Water Spaniels are annoyed when teased and can really bark loudly and whine when very much displeased. It has a possessive streak wit its own food and toys.
It is so happy with lots of exercise and play especially fetching and swimming with its owners. It can also be very stubborn, but it can have a well mannered attitude when properly trained. Most breeds easily adapts to their new home, but its’ good to have an especial yard for them, fenced so they can go around often for exercise and play.
The Looks Of An American Water Spaniel
The height of the American Water Spaniel is around 15-18 inches, and the weight is around 25-45 pounds. This breed has an oil coated curly coat, which provides them with their water resistance, and has a solid and robust build. The coat can be wavy as well as curly, and also has an undercoat. Coloring includes liver, brown, or a dark chocolate color.
The American Water Spaniel has smooth hair on his face and head in contrast to the abundance of curls on the rest of his body. The ears and large and drooping, framing the face, and he sports an eager and intelligent expression
Sprucing Up An American Water Spaniel
American Water Spaniel can grow from 15 o 18 inches and weighs 25 to 45 pounds. This breed wears a coat which is oiled and curly, and water resistant! Its curly coat is wavy. An American Water Spaniel wears and undercoat! The color of its coat varies from dark chocolate color, brown and liver.
It has a robust and solid physique! It has a smooth hair on its face, contrary to the curly coat it wears all over! Its ears are dropping and large and give it a framing effect. It carries an intelligent and eager facial expression.
Health
The coat of an American Water Spaniel is groomed properly by brushing it regularly. Weekly, its coat is groomed and brushed, so the hairs shredded will not create a matting effect on its body. The ear canals are regularly cleaned up and kept dry, especially when it has water so bacteria and infectious diseases are avoided. Its air is usually clipped when its ears are cleaned on the top of its ears and it is also rounded on its feet as well.
American Spaniels live as old as 10 to 15 years old. It has some health disorders and conditions to look out for, common to its breed, like seizures, HD, PRA, luxating patella, retinal detachment, epilepsy, cataracts, and thyroid problems. All American Spaniels puppies’ parents carry a CERF or OFA certificates.
Lineage
American Water Spaniels are from the United Sates, but its exact ancestry leads to a Curly Coated retriever, Irish Water Spaniel and an Old English Water Spaniel. These dogs are bred to retrieve water games, like rabbits, geese, and ducks. Its name was registered with AKC in the year 1940.
