This breed can be very messy and has a dark deep bark. Otterhounds are great for farm houses but not for elegant houses in New York, unless you can manage it well. Not advisable for houses who are kept under strict adherence to cleanliness. It has its stubborn and excitable streak character which can be amusing most times.

Training can be very challenging and dog owners must be experienced, before even thinking of owning an Otterhound. Otterhounds gets along with older children, especially when socializing skills started as a puppy.

Otterhounds wear their coat shaggy, long, and dense. Its coat colors are red, grizzle, tri colored, wheaten, tan, liver, or a combination of tan and black. It has an innocent, funny, and sweet expression as it is fringe and floppy. It also has webbed feet. Its height can measure from 23 to 26 inches for a female Otterhounds and 24-28 for males Otterhounds. The weight of female Otterhound is 65 to 100 pounds and males usually weigh 85 to 115. It is athletic, sturdy and large in built under a shaggy stylish coat.

Otterhounds shaggy coat does not require heavy maintenance in grooming. Dedicated time is needed to have its coat really look great. In a week, the coat is brushed twice. It can get clipped regularly depending on the need.

It ears are cleaned to avoid infections and bacteria coming in. It also has a beard which needs to be cleaned and trimmed for hygienic purposes. Otterhounds are occasional shredders and can heavily shred depending on the season. It is a dog ideal for people without allergies.
